  • FIDE 100th Anniversary Event

On the 20th of July 2024 it was FIDE’s 100th Anniversary. To celebrate, our little village had a dream, to have a simultaneous against one of the best English players of all time, the world champion over 50, Michael Adams.

We invited clubs from around the local area for a once-in-a-lifetime event. and organised Michael Adams’ appearance.

We worked with Norton Canes Primary Academy to be the venue for the event, who kindly allowed us access to their school hall. It went from dream to reality in the blink of an eye!

We had over 60 attendees and 44 players felt brave enough to take on Michael Adams for this event.

The final score was (who’d have guessed it?) 44 Wins, 0 Draws, 0 Losses to Michael Adams’ unparalleled skill on the battlefield. With no breaks, he played 24 games at the same time, and as he beat one opponent, the next sat down.

It was truly a spectacle to behold. and we were honoured to be able to play against such an esteemed player as Michael Adams.

This has really shown that chess continues to grow at a rapid pace in the West Midlands. Even Michael Adams was surprised at the number of juniors that came to the event.
